The spiny, cane-like stems (up to 75) of this desert plant reach as high as 20 feet and are leafless most of the year. After a rain the leaves quickly appear and then wither as the soil dries. These straight canes reach out from the base in an inverted funnel shape. Dense clusters of red tubular flowers appear at the ends of the stems from early spring into June. This plant prefers open and rocky soil and does well on rocky slopes or planted in rows to make a living fence. This tree can live from 60 to 100 years.
