Many people of the world have relied on the fruit from this “true” date palm for centuries. Male and female flowers grow on separate trees, and only female trees produce dates, when there is a male tree nearby. Pale yellow blossoms appear in late winter to early spring, and orange to red dates follow. Large blue-gray leaves reach up to 20 feet in length and the tree grows to 60 feet or more. This tree loves a hot, dry climate and has sharp spine and leaf tips.
